Running toilets, dripping faucets, and other common plumbing problems are a source of annoyance every homeowner knows. With just a little basic plumbing knowledge, you'll be able to solve many of these issues or decide when to call a plumber.

Running toilet

A worn flapper is the most common cause of a running toilet. Remove the tank lid and press the flapper down. If the running stops, your flapper is worn and should be replaced. A high water level is another possible cause. If water is constantly flowing into the overflow tube, adjust the float so the tank fills to an inch or two below the top of the tube.

Dripping faucet

In a compression-type faucet with two knobs, the problem is usually worn out valve seat washers, which you can replace. A cartridge faucet, which has two handles, most likely needs its O-rings replaced. In a ball-type faucet, the source of a leak can be hard to spot, but buying a repair kit will make your job easier.

Clogged drain

One of the most frustrating common plumbing problems, clogs can often be removed just by pouring a few spoons of dish soap into the drain, followed by a pan of hot water. If that doesn't work, using a plunger should be your next step. A drain auger (plumber's snake) can also help, but a clog that just won't budge is best left to a pro.

Rusty hot water

If the water coming from your hot water taps looks orange or carries specks of debris, chances are the cause is sediment buildup at the bottom of your water heater tank. Over time, sand, dirt, and minerals from your water supply accumulate at the bottom of the tank, but routine flushing will get the tank clean again. This is a simple job you can do yourself with just a bucket and a garden hose. A tankless water heater requires a different approach.
